WHAT ARE HOTSPOTS? / HOTSPOTS OF INDIA

HOTSPOTS: IT IS THE AREA WHICH EXHIBIT HIGH SPECIES REACHNESS AS WELL AS HIGH SPECIES ENDEMISM ARE TERMED AS HOTSPOTS OF BIODIVERSITY. THIS TERM WAS INTRODUCED BY "MYERS" IN 1988 .

TO QUALITY AS A BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOTS A REGION MUST MEET TWO STRICT CRITERIA.
1. NUMBER OF ENDEMIC SPECIES : IT MUST CONTAIN ATLEAST 0F 1500 RELATED PLANTS SPECIES.
2.DEGREE OF THREAD : IT MUSH HAVE 30 PER CENT OF ITS ORIGIONAL VEGETATION.

HOTSPOTS OF INDIA : THERE ARE FOUR HOSPOTS OF INDIA 

1.WESTERN GHATS: IT IS THE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BIO-GEOGRAPHIC ZONES OF INDIA AND ONE OF THE MOST RICHESH CENTRE OF VARIABLE SPECIES. IT IS SPREADED INTO 6 STATES OF INDIA MOST OF THE SPECIES IN THIS AREA ARE CONSIDERED TO BE THREATENED ALMOST 235 OF SPECIES OF FLOURA AND FOUNA ARE CONSIDERED TO BE ENDANGERED .

2. EASTERN HIMALAYS : IT COMPRISES AREA OF NEPAL , BHUTAN , STATES OF EAST AND NORTH- EAST INDIA AND IN SOUTH- WESTERN CHINA. THERE ARE ESTINATED TO BE 9000 PLANT SPECIES OUT OF WHICH 3500 SPECIES ARE UNIQUELY DEFINED .

3. INDO - BURMA : THIS INCLUDES NORTH- EASTERN INDIA, EXCEPT ASSAM AND ANDAMAN GROUP OF ISLAND .

4.SUNDALANDS . IT INCLUDES NICOBAR GROUP OF ISLANDS SUCH AS INDONESIA, SINGAPORE PHILLIPPINES.
